Assignment update

Grade seven...its finally here.
Below is the outline of your Statistics project: This is group work and should not be done otherwise.

Statistics Project
This unit will review and introduce concepts important to your study of statistics. You will create a product at the end of this unit that will show your understanding of this topic.
Due Date: February 17, 2012.
Knowledge (20 points)
You will create a foldable that includes definitions for the following statistics terms. All definitions can be found in the glossary of your textbook or on any math websites. (10 points)

Mean
Outlier
Upper Extreme (Maximum)
Stem and Leaf Plot
Median
Box and Whisker Plots
Lower Quartile

Mode
Inter-quartile Range
Upper Quartile

Range
Lower Extreme (Minimum)
Measures of Central Tendency

You will learn and sing the statistics song on demand (to the tune of “Are you sleeping?”) (10 points)
Mean means average, mean means average, Mode means most, mode means most, Median’s in the middle, median’s in the middle, Now I know, now I know. Range means difference, range means difference, Big minus small, big minus small, these are all statistics, these are all statistics, Now I know, now I know.

 Comprehension (20 points)
Complete the following statistics assignments:The sheet is attached to your print-out.
            What do they call the guy that invented the first blue jeans?
            What happened to the cat that swallowed a ball of yarn?

Application (20 points)
Survey 10 classmates for the following information: Name, Shoe size, Eye color, Number of people living in their homes, Age, Favorite T.V. show, and Favorite food.
● Create a table that shows all information.
● Analyze the data for the mean, median, mode, and range.
·  Is all data well suited for the mean, median, mode, and range?

 Synthesis (30 points)
You will conduct research on retail prices for your favorite singer’s newest C.D.
You must find 20 prices using online stores.
Create a box and whisker plot and a stem and leaf plot to display this information.
A poster or Power Point of this data must be turned in.

 Evaluation (10 points)
Write a 5 paragraph essay that answers the following questions: What is the significance of the study of statistics? How could this be used in your daily life? Include three examples of how statistics are used. Examples: sports, school, etc.     


Grade eight:
  • complete Practice 1-3 for Thursday's class.
  • Remember to get youselves a ruler, a pair of compass as well as a protractor for Thursday's class.
